Tire Maintenance tips

Torquing your tires:

When new tires are installed your wheels must be re-torqued within 50-100km. Re-torquing involves tightening the lug nuts to help ensure they're not too tight or loose. If they are too tight the nuts can damage the bolt threads, break fasteners or warp new rotors. If they are too loose, your wheel could loosen and potentially fall off when you're driving (although it is incredibly unlikely, it can compromise your safety).

Why should you rotate your tires?

Our team at Prior Tire recommend you rotate your tires every 70,000 - 10,000km and more frequently if you do most of your driving around town or have front wheel/all wheel drive. This simple and inexpensive process follows one of four patterns (see diagram).

Rotating your tires regularly promotes uniform tread wear and will extend the life of your tires. It can also boost your vehicle fuel economy and overall performance.

Tire Pressure Guide

Improper pressure also affects vehicle handling. Tires lose approximately 1 psi per month under normal weather conditions, and significantly more when the temperature drops or a wheel is damaged. Similarly, low pressure in turn increases heat and can damage a wheel even more. It's important to regularly check your tire pressure with a tire gauge, as low pressure isn't noticeable to the naked eye. Our team at Prior Tire can assist you with all your tire questions and needs.

Additional Tips

  • Balanced tires as necessary. Tires that aren't balanced may be detected in bumps that become more noticeable at higher speeds.
  • Install new tires in sets or pairs. The addition of one new tire to the rotation cycle can cause instability and create vehicle handling issues. When new tires are needed, two new tires should be installed on the rear of a vehicle, and the partially worn tires should be moved to the front of the vehicle.
  • Be mindful of abnormal tire wear or damage to your tires. Watch for signs of punctures, embedded objects, cracks and bulges.
  • Always keep a spare tire, and make sure it's properly inflated and ready for use. You never know when you're going to need it.
